"the new york times" reporting gop leaders are considering extending tax cuts for the fiscal class to avert the fiscal cliff but if that is the case republicans are staying very tight lipped about it. joining me is senator ben carden from maryland a member of the budget committee and the committee on finance. good to have you here and you have said one thing you want from these talks is to show the markets and to show leaders, that leaders have the situation under control there, in your estimation, how would you say that's going so far? >> well predictability is very important. i think the first step is exactly what leader reid said. if we can get predictability on the taxable income below $250,000, everyone knows that's under current rates and also give us the additional revenue we need on that income above $250,000, it shows us that we are moving towards a balanced way to deal with the fiscal cliff. it would be an incredible lift, i think, to confidence in the markets. >> so with raising revenue

hostage by the fiscal cliff. how much pressure does this additional pressure put on republicans, seeing chris christie show up at the white house knowing that he needs money for his hard-hit state? >> it's a tremendous amount of pressure. part of what the strategy of think of what we're see hearing is the republicans are becoming increasingly isolated. you think about the discharge position. essentially even if they don't sign on to it, the point is they're going to own this mess. they're the ones who are seen to be, as the public suggests, not willing to make a deal. it is not unreasonable. we've all seen those horrifying images from the devastation of hurricane sandy. it's not unreasonable the governor of the state of new jersey would come and say i need help. americans are going to see that. they see the republicans becoming increasingly sort of isolated and, again, it becomes this question of why are you holding the rest of us hostage for the top 2%? so the problem for the republicans is they don't have a lot of good options at this point to get themselves out of this corner. >> our

, with some news, the latest on the rapidly approaching fiscal cliff deadline and what appears to be a stalemate in the negotiationses. in his first interview since the election president obama reiterated his demand that any deal must raise taxes on the highest earners. but yesterday the president also appeared to showroom for flexibility on lowering those tax rates in the future. >> i don't think that the issue right now has to do with sitting in a room. the issue right now that's relevant is the acknowledgement that if we're going to raise revenues that are sufficient to balance with the very tough cuts that we've already made and further reforms entitlements i'm prepared to make that we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up, and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. what i suggest is let's essentially put a down payment on taxes. let's let tax rates on the upper income folks go up. and then let's set up a process with a time certain end of 2013 or the fall of 2013 where we work on tax reform. we look at what loopholes and deductions both democr
